Course Mission

Students will be introduced to the essential tools, methods and workflows used in digital art production. Through guided exercises and project-based learning, students will develop confidence using digital drawing software while building a foundation in drawing, composition, colour and visual communication.

Course Summary

Students will begin with software navigation, brush control, layers, selections, references and basic workflow organization. The course will introduce drawing structure, shape, colour, lighting and composition. Through six guided projects, learners will apply these fundamentals to produce complete digital artwork and develop a practical creative process.

Course Content with Time Allocation

Build digital illustration skills through professional reference studies, character and environment exercises, original prop design, digital painting, and a complete final illustration.

2 Weeks

Character Reference Recreation

Study professional character artwork from platforms such as Pinterest or ArtStation. Students will redesign a character using different props, clothing, and visual styles while preserving the original pose, structure, and overall composition.

2 Weeks

Background Reference Recreation

Analyze professional environment artwork and recreate a background frame using a new layout and color palette. Students will practice composition, perspective, lighting, and visual storytelling while maintaining a similar artistic approach.

2 Weeks

Original Portrait Illustration

Using references from their favourite artists, students will create an original portrait illustration focused on facial structure, expression, lighting, color, and personal style.

2 Weeks

Original Prop Design

Design one original prop for a character of the student’s choice. The project will explore shape language, function, materials, storytelling, and how the prop visually connects to the character’s personality and world.

2 Weeks

Original Environment Painting

Transform a selected landscape photograph into a digital environment painting. Students will simplify shapes, adjust composition, develop atmosphere, and reinterpret the reference through lighting, color, and painterly techniques.

3 Weeks

Final Original Illustration

Create one complete original illustration as the final project. Students may develop a character with a background, a digital painting, or another form of illustrative artwork while applying the composition, lighting, color, and design skills developed throughout the course.
