Course Mission

The program provides a technical education that introduces students to the fundamentals of animation, 3D modeling and architectural rendering while encouraging collaboration and professionalism. Through innovative teaching, industry-relevant methods and high artistic and academic standards, students will develop an understanding of the essential stages of a professional 3D production pipeline.

Course Summary

3D Modeling is an introductory course focused on software commonly used in the current game and visual effects industries, including Maya, Arnold Renderer and ZBrush. Students will learn how to navigate each program and understand the logic behind its major tools. The course begins with simple functions and gradually introduces more advanced features while students create engaging and visually polished 3D artwork.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Learn how to use the industry-standard 3D software Autodesk Maya.
  • Create several original 3D assets for use in future projects and courses.
  • Understand the fundamentals of Arnold rendering and virtual lighting.
  • Understand the professional production pipeline for creating 3D assets.
  • Learn how to create organic digital sculptures using ZBrush.
  • Develop basic modeling, texturing, lighting and rendering workflows.
  • Build portfolio-ready pieces that showcase technical and creative 3D work.

Course Content with Time Allocation

Follow the complete 3D production process, from learning the Maya interface and fundamental modeling tools to character sculpting, rendering, compositing, and a finished portfolio-ready poster.

1 Week

Maya Installation & Interface

Install and set up Autodesk Maya while becoming familiar with its main interface, navigation controls, panels, and workspace. Students will also learn how to create, move, rotate, and scale basic 3D shapes.

1 Week

Introduction to Modeling Tools

Learn the fundamental polygon modeling tools used in Maya, including extrude, bevel, edge loops, subdivisions, and object manipulation. Students will begin building simple forms while developing clean and organized modeling habits.

3 Weeks

3D Poster Background Project

Students will select an IP or visual theme and create a complete 3D environment for a poster render. This project develops practical modeling skills while introducing perspective, camera placement, composition, lighting, and storytelling in a 3D scene.

2 Weeks

Character Sculpting Fundamentals

Learn the basic ZBrush interface, sculpting brushes, navigation, and essential functions. Students will begin blocking out the main forms, proportions, and silhouette of a character designed for the final poster project.

4 Weeks

Full Character Sculpt

Develop the character sculpt from the initial blockout into a refined model with complete anatomy, clothing, accessories, surface details, and vertex color. Students will also learn more advanced ZBrush techniques and render the sculpt with Arnold.

1 Week

Final Composition & Poster Render

Combine the completed ZBrush character with the Maya environment, lighting, and camera setup. Students will complete the final composition, render the full scene, and prepare a polished 3D poster suitable for presentation or portfolio use.
