Course Mission
This weekly class is taught by industry animators with professional models posing in our life drawing classroom. This course offers a comprehensive coverage of figure drawing ranging from short poses, and long poses to anatomy studies. Figure drawing being a crucial component of the animator’s tool kit when it come to understanding movement and dynamic posing. Whether you are looking to get started with life drawing or to elevate your figure drawing abilities, this course has you covered!
Course Summary
Students will be introduced to the importance of design in character animation. Line, shape, negative space, volume, and colour will be studied. The relationships of these elements (proximity, balance, rhythm/repetition, proportion, variety and size) will be emphasised. Three dimensional models will be created to understand structure. Through drawn exercises, students will learn to create strong character poses that communicate effectively with the audience. Students will study various artistic styles in animation and work individually and as part of a team to create effective, original character models.

- Understand and utilize the tools of figure drawing proficiently, including charcoal pencils, contes, newsprints, blue pencils, etc…
- Draw short-duration poses involving the figure, line of action, and basic structure
- Draw long-duration poses involving detailed anatomy, portraits, and lighting renders
- Utilize different drawing techniques to construct strong structures and poses

Course Content with Time Allocation
Figure Drawing
– 2 Week
Understand the basics of figure drawings, life of action, head proportions, basic anatomy shapes, body structure, and dynamic movements.
Bean Study
– 2 Week
Start with teaching the bean as a basic structure to the torso, and utilize the Loomis method for the head. Help learners get comfortable with dynamic poses.
Short Poses
– 3 Weeks
Focusing on quick action poses, instructors are to break down different techniques for drawing convincing short 1-minute, 2-minute, and 5-minute poses.
Long Poses
– 3 Weeks
Focusing on longer timed 10 min, 15 min, 20 min 30 min poses, instructors are to go into the details including portrait, torso, hand landmarks, muscle groups, and shading
Portrait Study
– 2 Weeks
Break down the portrait using facial proportions, breaking down eyes, nose, mouth ears, and hair leading to the introduction of expressions.
Anatomy Studies, Torso, Hands, Feet, Limbs
– 2 Weeks
Focusing on the intricate body parts and ones that students often face challenges in. Break down the construction of torsos, hands, feet, and limbs.
